Touchpoints for May 2008 Dates: May 13th- Board Meeting-6 pm May 26th-Memorial Day-holiday May 31st-Work Party June 28th-All Preschool Potluck/Tidelands Park July 4th- Independence Day-holiday July 25th-Last day of School July 28th-First Day of the August Program Let’s Picnic Spring has already sprung and we are ready to have a get together to play and get reacquainted as a preschool community. We will have the potluck at Tidelands Park in Coronado. There is a grassy area and a nice children’s playground. We each bring a dish for up to eight people. The notice and sign up will be in each classroom. The date is June 28th. Plan to come and relax and enjoy the time together. A special thank you to all of you for your participation in the Auction. It was a big success. I especially want to recognize the leadership on the committee. Kathryn Haro had a wonderful spirit that became contagious throughout the months of work on the event. Cate Pietro Smith had a nothing is impossible attitude and pulled a number of all night work sessions getting the donation sheet in order. Melanie Novak put the catalog together and never missed a beat with getting posters and invitations produced. Other committee members who also made the event happen were Hilary Bilodeau, Karen Evenson, Mary Reed, Carmelita Talamentes, Stefania Elliasen, Kelly Gralewski, Jeffrey Brown, Alex Patterson, Kelly Wilson and Liane Fry (VP of Development on the Board). Auction Results It appears that we made about $24,000 from the silent and live auction with considering any additional costs that will come in. In addition, we made $9250 for the Fund-an-item (scholarship/tuition reduction fund). A final tally will still be needed to account for those outstanding costs. This money will allow the school to make needed improvements to yards and classrooms. Ten percent of every fundraiser also goes to our budget reserves. We are most excited about the response to the scholarship/tuition reduction fund, making it possible for children who otherwise couldn’t go here, to attend. We are going to be able to begin that process in the fall. Speaking of Fixing Things Up…. Work party is on the horizon. The day is scheduled for May 31st. It is on the calendar you were given Orientation Night. For those of you who are new to the school, it is the day we all get together and sand, paint and clean the classrooms. It is also another way to get to know everyone and promote the sense of community. Your work party representative will post a note in or outside the classroom for you to sign up for your job. There is childcare provided, but we cannot take infants. Dylan Calsyn is the work party chairperson this year. He will be meeting with the work party Room Reps to organize the event. If you cannot attend that day, there will still be a job assigned. We certainly would rather have you here. There are always yummy bagels, fruit and of course, coffee! Thank You From the Staff for the Benefits from the Annual Fundraiser As you know, from reading the budget report sent out for your approval in March, the staff receive 50% of their health benefits covered by the school. As you also know, health insurance is costly and is also a major national problem. One of the great things that staff can choose from as the result of that fundraiser, is to use the funds they get to cover more of their health insurance costs that are out of pocket. We can also use the money for classroom enhancement (teacher allowance); professional growth; tuition reduction for their child or a cash bonus. Several of us use the money for health insurance; a couple staff members use the money for tuition assistance for their child, some for additional professional growth funding and one for a cash bonus. We are all very grateful for that fundraiser. It is a huge boost for all of us. August Program Leah has put notices up on the classroom bulletin boards and in pockets that the opportunity to enroll will be on May 12th. You will receive a form in your classroom pocket. We typically serve up to 15 children and it is a full day program. If spaces are not filled, we can serve half day. Registration is a first come first serve system. The Teachers that have volunteered to work are Bernie, Carmelita, Ljiljana. Patti and Wendy Rockwell, who is also a Preschool Teacher at Point Loma Presbyterian Church. A Safety Reminder: Children under the age of 15 should not be left in the car alone. In addition to the recent heat wave (which can be life threatening to young, children, toddlers and infants left in the car), children do not have the judgment to handle many situations that could come up in a parking lot. I have witnessed a number of occasions in which even older children were experiencing stress and a lack of safety by being left in the car. Please call one of us if there is a reason you cannot bring a sibling into the school at pick up time and we will try to help you if we are available to leave the office. I appreciate your cooperation with this safety issue. If you see a child or infant unattended in a car, please get me. I appreciate your cooperation with this safety issue. Patty Reminder Please turn off your cell phones when working in the classroom. If you are expecting a critical communication, let the office know and we can help cover the room. Thank you for your help here as well.
